Some declined to accept as a genuine production of nature, a creature apparently half mammal and half bird, furred and webfooted, with a beavertail and ducklike bill. Soon, however, there was ample proof that the "Duckbill Mole" or "Water Mole" old colonial names for Ornithorkynchus anatinus actually existed. Early reports of the fact that it laid eggs were discounted until a young Cambridge zoologist named Caldwell described the eggs in some detail in 1884.
