By the time he had decided he had gone too far and returned to the tree the last of the party, knowing there was no one else to come and seeing no one in front of them, pulled the rope up behind them, so the unfortunate fellow spent the night in the canyon. It is not known if Snow's promotion was influenced by this oversight.
